My dog is vomiting and has diarrhea but is still hyper. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 8 months and 11 days old | 27 lbs

Hi there. My dog just puked three times and diarrhea all over the floor. The vomit looked like food but it's been hours since she ate. She's otherwise still really hyper and running around. Is it possibly heat exhaustion?

Unless she was outdoors her exhaustion is not very likely. It could be a mild case of gastritis (upset tummy) or even a mild toxin exposure. Sometimes giving small amounts of water frequently and seeing if the pet holds that down and, if so, then slow re-introduction of food is all that is needed. If they vomit the water it is more serious and a veterinarian should examine the pet. If, however, your dog continues to vomit, has bloody diarrhea, seems painful or has a distended appearance to her stomach she should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Hi, there are multiple things that could cause Bellatrix to have vomiting and diarrhea. If she is very hyper and his just come in from a very hot day heat exhaustion maybe one possibility, but intestinal parasites and parvovirus have to be kept in mind with a young dog. Keep her calm and quiet and try to see if she will drink a small bit of water (not a lot) and can keep that down without vomiting. If she continues to vomit or have diarrhea or there is any blood in it she needs to see a veterinarian ASAP. If you are concerned she may have gotten overheated see if she will allow you to take her temperature rectally with a regular thermometer. Normal temperature for dogs should be between 101°F to 102.5 Fahrenheit. If her temperature is much above 103 you should also consider getting her to a veterinarian. I hope Belatrix is feeling better soon
