My dog has low energy after a tick. Could it be a tick-borne disease?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 7 years and 11 months old | 14 lbs

my dog has very little energy. she is normally a very calm dog but recently she had a tick and now she has little interest and sleeps very often. she still eats and drinks and will play a bit if encouraged but i was wondering if there are any diseases that could've been given to her by the tick that's causing this

There are several tick-borne diseases that could cause lethargy. These include lyme disease, rocky mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiciosis and anaplasmosis. If your dog is lethargic, a visit to your vet is recommended. They can perform a good physical exam and may recommend bloodwork including testing for these tick-borne diseases. It is possible the lethargy could be related to the tick, but there are also many other possible causes for lethargy. An exam and bloodwork will help us narrow down the possible causes.
