My dog has a red eye but no pain. Should I take her to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | 170 lbs

My dog, that plays rough, has what looks like blood red filling the white part of one eye. I noticed something off in color a few days ago but she wouldn't stop playing long enough for me to really see. Today I noticed it was still there. She has no pain, no weird behavior or itching and she can still see and focus with that eye. It really doesn't seem to phase her at all. Should I take her to the vet, or is it likely just her playing rough and it will clear up on its own?

I am so sorry that Tasha has hurt her eye. I am concerned that she has injured her eye and that it could get worse if not properly treated. I would recommend to take her to your veterinarian for an exam, diagnostics, and possibly eye medication. Your vet may want to stain her eye to ensure there isn't a scratch on her cornea. There is a good chance that it could be just bruised or irritated, but I would rather be safe than sorry and have her eye get worse and/or infected. I hope that sweet girl's eye starts to feel better soon!

Hello, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It looks like she's got some focal bleeding/bruising of the whites of her eyes. This could be due to trauma. It's possible it could self resolve, but I always recommend erring on the safe side when it comes to eyes - so I would definitely recommend having her seen by your vet. It's always best to make sure there's nothing serious going on! Hope this helps!
