My dog is losing weight with bloody, soft stool. Is it parasites?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 54 lbs

My dog lost about 1kg lately and started having soft feces, with mucus-like texture. One day there was also a little bit of blood in the stool. Is it some intestinal parasite?

Intestinal parasites are certainly possible given Michelle's soft, bloody stool and weight loss. Other possible causes of these signs include inflammatory bowel disease, viruses, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, among others. Since not every dewormer treats every parasites, your best bet is to take Michelle and a stool sample for her vet for evaluation to determine if deworming is indicated and if other conditions are suspected. I hope that all goes well!
