Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | spayed | 3 months and 15 days old | 9 lbs
Hi! We purchased Missy Saturday June 3rd from All Pets Club in Meriden, CT. She has been doing great House training so far, but I noticed from one of her poop accidents that it looks a bit runny, bloody, and has some mucus. Her first vet appointment is scheduled for June 23rd. Should I be worriedv new dog owner here and want to make sure I'm doing what I should! Thanks!

This type of diarrhea could be due to G.I. parasites, which is not uncommon at all in puppies. This could also be related to the stress of a new home environment or diet change if it's occurred in the past week or so. There are over-the-counter deworming medication. However you may want to contact your veterinarian and see if they want you to bring in a fecal sample so they can tell you for sure if she has G.I. parasites. Generally speaking deworming medication it's fairly safe and would not be harmful if your puppy did not have parasites. However there are some G.I. parasites that require prescription strength deworming medication. But your veterinarian could do the fecal test and tell you if that is the case.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Bobby. I certainly understand being concerned! This blood could be caused by a sudden change in diet, intestinal worms, eating something rotten, a foreign body, or a severe illness. To be safe, I would call a vet now to see if you can get him in this weekend. If you can't get him in this weekend, it's fine to wait until Monday to have him seen since he's otherwise acting normally. If he starts vomiting, stops eating, or becomes very lethargic, take him into an ER vet immediately. I hope this helps!

It’s most likely the puppy. I would bring a stool sample in for them to check for parasites including coccidia and giardia. Then they can give the right medication to clear this up. It is less common for an older dog that is acting fine to have poop like that. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for your dogs.
