My new puppy has hookworms, hernia, and is underweight. Will he be healthy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 14 days old | 10 lbs

I just got a german shepard puppy that had a good health cert from a vet. I took her to my vet and find out 2 days after I got her that she has hookworms, is truly under weight and has a hernia. If I fix the hernia and we treat the worms (which I do not know how bad they are yet) should she be a healthy dog then? Or are there other test I should run since obviously the other vet didnt release all the info on this animal. and now I am wondering if there might be other issues? Or could I be ok

Health certificates only verify that the pet does not have contagious illnesses and are safe to transport without being a danger to other animals that may come in contact with them. A health certificate would not state anything about a hernia and depending on if a fecal exam was done prior to issuing the health certificate, there may not be any indication of this particular parasite on the health certificate. Fecal exams are not required for health certificates in some states. It would be the responsibility of the seller or breeder to inform you of issues like this. Hernias are repairable and hookworms are very treatable. These are not uncommon issues in puppies.
