Why is my cat losing hair on his chest? Should I be concerned?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

I have just come home from a weekend away, and my cat was left by himself for two nights. I have noticed a weird bald patch on his chest, and found a small tuft of hair in his water bowl + a few tufts around the bedroom. The patch doesn't seem aggravated or red, and the cat does not seem out of character. Should there be cause for concern?

Hair loss can occur for a lot of reasons including trauma, and infection, and endocrine diseases. If your cat is acting normally otherwise no other lesions appear sometimes monitoring it is helpful at home. However if further hair loss occurs, the area to see turns red or any bumps appear a veterinarian needs to examine your cat.

Hello, sorry to hear about Jez. You should indeed monitor that area for any persistent hair loss and redness. Also monitor for scratching or any other areas that he could have hair loss. If you note any of these then he should be evaluated by his veterinarian. Common causes of hair loss and redness include allergies, parasites, ringworm, or other metabolic skin diseases. Hope this helps and best of luck.
