My dog's neutered scrotum has a large, smelly open wound. Help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Treeing Walker Coonhound | Male | neutered | 60 lbs

My dog has a huge open wound on his scrotum. He was neutered three years ago and a small place usually comes back every so often but nothing like this. It smells terrible. He is almost 10 years old. Is there anything we can do at home before the vet tomorrow? He isn't guaranteed to be seen by the vet yet. We have tried an Elizabethan collar, antibiotics, and a wound cleaning spray for animals. Nothing is seeming to help... what can we do tonight to comfort him or help him?

Poor Ben! You should keep the ecollar on as a deterrent to lo licking, keep the area as clean and dry as possible and you can try warm compressing the area. Do not give human medication as it can be very toxic. You should continue with your plan to see his veterinarian tomorrow.
