Is it normal for one of my ferrets to be much smaller than the other?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Exotic | Unknown - Exotic | Female | spayed | 10 months and 25 days old

I have 2 ferrets and they will be a yr next month my brown one is a lot bigger than my white one. I'm not sure if I should get her checked out to make sure she is still okay. She is still playful and eating and drinking too.

Ferrets can vary a bit in size so they don't all turn out exactly the same weight/length. You don't mention if the other ferret is male, if so it will end up substantially larger than the female. As long as she is eating and drinking and active with normal bowel movements, I would just continue to monitor her.

If they are about to turn a year old it's a good idea to have a veterinarian do an annual exam and possibly vaccines. Find a veterinarian that is comfortable treating ferrets. This may just be her size, or it could be indicative of a problem. Ferrets are great pets but are prone to a number of illness so it would be a great idea to have an established relationship and history with an exotics vet if they should ever need it. Veterinary partner has a number of good articles on ferret care and some of their disorders. http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx
