My dog throws up weekly. When should I worry and what's on his nose?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 6 months old | 57 lbs

At what point is a dog throwing up alarming? I would say he has been throwing up one a week/ every other week for the past month or so. Other than that, no other signs. Also, last night when he was sleeping I noticed his nose has white dry stuff on it. What could this be? Thanks.

Hello. Vomiting off and on could be a problem with the diet (food allergy or a gastritis often seen with raw food or bones in the diet), or could be due to a problem in the kidneys/liver, or could be due to an obstruction (for example- if he ate a tennis ball and it is bouncing around in his stomach and intermittently blocking food from moving through). A dry nose while sleeping is normal, and the white stuff could be nothing. If there is a lot of discharge, and if it is yellow/green or continuous, or if Marshall is having issues breathing, then I would have him seen right away. Otherwise, I would try changing the diet to a good quality dog food, and also feed two meals a day, with a small snack right before bed. This may help with the vomiting. If the vomiting persists then x-rays are suggested. Good luck with Marshall.
