My dog has anemia and an abscess. Is it serious and what can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 40 lbs

I took my 1 year old lab to the vet this evening for an abscess. The vet said it's not a mature abscess so they weren't able to drain anything from it. Her CBC showed a RBC of 26. The low normal is 37. Her CMP was normal. The heart worm/tick disease test was normal. She was prescribed an NSAID and antibiotics. Is the anemia something I should be worried about? What can I do for it?

Anemia should be ideally retested. At this stage, with the clinical informations you provided, is mild to moderate and could have been caused only by inflammation. I would recommend to retest the anemia when both the abscess is completely resolved and the course of treatment over.
