Dog bite infection not healing? What antibiotics should I try?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 130 lbs

What antibiotic is used to treat a bacterial infection from dogs saliva? I have been to the vet and they prescribed clavamox and baytril, but they were shooting in the dark. Now we're back with another flair up and he can only be on clavamox due to sight loss, but the clavamox doesn't seem to be doing anything; in fact it looks to be getting worse. Do you know where I can find what antibiotic will affectively treat this bacteria?

Clavamox is the most commonly used antibiotic in the world for dog bites (also in humans by the way). it's rare but sometimes clavamox won't work in such a case, my next antibiotic choices would be Metronidazole or Cephalexin. you will still need to get them from your vet though.
