Best food for a skinny Yorkie? My 1-year-old needs to gain weight.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | unspayed | 11 months and 19 days old

I have a Yorkie named Pebbles who will be turning 1 years old on the 17th, I give her Natural Balance but i find that she's to skinny. She eats regularly and i give her daily vitamins. Is there something else i can give her or another brand of food to fatten her up a bit?

Have Pebbles examined by your veterinarian to diagnose any medical causes such as intestinal parasites, malabsorption or maldigestion issues. Once she is cleared medically, you can try increasing the amount of food being fed. Switching to a "hotter" (higher protein) food should be done gradually to prevent gastrointestinal upset. Canidae, Acana, Orijen, Taste of The Wild and the Royal Canin line are all premium diets. The website www.dogfoodadvisor.com is an excellent resource for comparing diets.

I would make sure you are feeding Mila according to the package instructions on the dog food bag, and also make sure she is up to date on her deworming treatments as intestinal worms can causing her to be skinny. I would also have her seen by your vet for them to determine if she is too skinny, and the vet can recommend additional things to help her gain weight.
