What to do if you find an injured stray cat in your backyard?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Bobtail | Male | unneutered

There's a stray cat in our backyard and we think it got into a scuffle with our dog, and it's in bad shape. The pictures show the area where the blood is the worst, but there are little spots throughout the backyard. We got it in a cage and it appears stable, but this has never happened and we don't know what to do.

Oh dear, poor little cat! Since you already have the cat in a cage, I recommend taking the cat to a vet immediately for evaluation. Try to avoid handling the cat further since you do not know if he has been vaccinated for rabies and animals in pain can become quite aggressive. The vet will also be able to scan the cat to determine if a microchip is present because this would allow them to find the cat's owners. If you cannot take him to a vet, look for a local shelter because most have veterinary care available. I hope that all goes well!
