My dog licked chocolate. Is it dangerous? Should I give him milk?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 4.2 lbs

I caught my dog licking a butterfinger candy bar. I took it away and gave him some milk. The candy bar itself is melted and I don't think he ate much. What should I do?

Because Domino only licked it, he would not have consumed enough chocolate to cause any toxicity, so it's not a problem. I would caution about giving him milk, however, as this causes GI upset in dogs and can make him vomit and have diarrhea. It's not recommended to give milk when dogs consume chocolate, as it does nothing to help with the symptoms of chocolate toxicity.
