Why is my puppy's ear swollen, painful, and he's tilting his head?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | 5 months old | 20 lbs

My puppy woke up from his nap about an hour ago and we noticed he was tilting his head to the side as if there was something in inspection we noticed that his right ear was swollen and tender to the touch. (He would cry when we tried to touch it) It also feels warm and heavy. Additionally above his left eye is also swollen and seems irritated however the eye itself isn't red or anything. FYI we had a beach trip today and he was playing in sand. He also has fleas that we are trying to get rid of.

Hello. I am sorry that Jeo isn't feeling well. Tilting the head to the side can be due to pain, an inner ear infection, or a problem within the brain. I think most likely with Leo this would be due to the ear either being painful, or an inner ear infection. The red eye could be due to a bit of trauma, or an insect bite. This could also have caused the swelling of the ear. Either way it sounds like he is in pain, so I would recommend having him to a vet. They can then determine if he needs other medications, and will look in his ear to see if he needs antibiotics. Good luck with Jeo.
