Why is my quail sick, limping, can't walk, and has broken feathers?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 1lb

I have an adult Quail that has been ailing for weeks. Started out puffed up. I noticed his wing&tail feathers were quite beat up. I isolated him from the other quail as they were picking on him. He was limping at that time. He has gotten progressively worse. Now cannot walk normally, scoots around if alarmed, lies on one side, tail and wing feathers are broken off, he eats if food is put near him. He is a 1 yr. old bird.

Since it is progressing, he should be examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating birds. Injury, nutritional deficiency and infection (bacterial, fungal or viral) are all possibilities. A complete physical exam and diagnostics may result in a diagnosis. Supportive care may also be indicated.
