Can I give my elderly cat eggs for health and a longer life?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Somali | Female | spayed | 12 years and 5 months old | 6 lbs

Is it healthy to give an elderly cat an egg every couple days? I've heard throughout my life that giving an old cat raw eggs, peanut butter, or canned fish (and even white popcorn!) can keep the animal healthy for longer. Is this safe for Penelope?

Feeding cats raw eggs, peanut butter, popcorn and canned fish sound like old wives' tales with no scientific basis. :-) That said, it is fine to give Penelope a cooked egg 1-2 times per week in addition to a balanced commercial diet. It won't necessarily keep her healthier for longer, but it shouldn't do any harm.
