My pug can't walk: Hip dysplasia or disc prolapse? What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Female | unspayed | 7 years old | 19.8 lbs

My pug (F,6yr old) is unlable to walk due to her hind limb. She started limping a little bit since Sepember 2016 and it got worse as she could climb up on the bed or stairs, so this year march, we did an xray, right after which she stopped walking. She could not walk, and one vet says she has hip dysplasia and the other vet says it may be disc prolapse. I dont know what to believe as in a small town like ours, we cannot do ct scan nor mri for dogs hence its very difficult to diagnose.Pls help

I would recommend referral to an orthopedic or neurology specialist in order to correctly determine the underlying cause and to establish a management program going forward to maintain her mobility in the future; the longer this goes untreated the greater chance of permanent changes that may not respond to treatment. Weight management, antiinflammatory medications and diets specifically formulated for joint health and mobility (royal canin mobility / hills joint care) are recommended and acupuncture or chiropractic care may also help with the symptoms
