Why is my dog itching and rubbing her lower back, causing calluses?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Female | spayed | 12 years and 5 months old | 18 lbs

My pug rubs her low back on anything and everything all day long. It never stops. It's turned into a big black callus. Do you know what it MIGHT be?

I'm sorry to hear that Edward is so uncomfortable! Rubbing and itching of the lower back and tail base is usually due to a flea related allergy or flea bite. Other allergic causes can result in this, but fleas and the lower back itchiness and usually synonymous with one another. If Edward isn't already, I would start on a flea preventative. I would also make sure there aren't any live fleas on Edward currently, as if this is the case an additional medication could be helpful. Something to help with the immediate discomfort might be useful as well, which might include an antihistamine or something stronger that would require a prescription from the vet. Hope this helps.
