Should I bathe my dog before applying Vectra 3D? Will it kill ticks?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | spayed | 7 years and 2 months old | 78 lbs

I removed 17 ticks from my dog last night. I purchased Vectra 3D today for tick prevention going forward. For any remaining ticks I might not have found yet on my dog, do I need to bathe her in a flea and tick shampoo, let her dry then apply Vectra. Or can I just apply the Vectra 3D without bathing her? Will Vectra 3D kill any remaiming ticks I haven't found?

A bath before application is not necessary or recommended. Topical preventatives use the oils in the skin to spread. Bathing removed these oils and may affect efficacy. Apply it directly to her skin as directed by the label.

The Vectra will kill any remaining ticks. You will not want to bath her after for a while so as not to wash out the product. So you can still bathe her prior to applying Vectra but I would NOT use a flea and tick shampoo. Too many products close together could make her sick. Also if she shows signs of illness anytime in the next few months mention ticks to your vet so they can screen her appropriately. But hopefully quickly removing them lessened the chance of disease transmission
