Why is my dog's hair falling out symmetrically with skin bumps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 6 years old | 15 lbs

Hello, I have a 6 year old Jack Russell mixed with Rat terrier named Beauty. For the past two years, she has two Symmetrical lines of hair loss on her back, we have taken her to different vets and none can point out the reason. My dog has done a lot blood work, and other all the blood works nothing was found. Just recently she has gotten some bumps above her tail, and her hair loss is getting worst. What is wrong?

Consider a consultation with a veterinary dermatologist. Frequently, bilateral hair loss in that area is caused by a thyroid condition. You can have blood submitted to Michigan State University for a comprehensive thyroid function panel. You can find more information at this site: https://www.dcpah.msu.edu/sections/endocrinology/ The dermatologist can test for infection (bacterial, fungal, mites, etc) or allergies. There seems to be many bumps/irritation in the area. An extended course of antibiotics may resolve a stubborn skin infection. An essential fatty acid supplement, such as DermCaps or EicosaCaps may promote healthy skin and coat.
