Why does my cat have a red, painful sore with black dots on her leg?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 2 years old | 10.4 lbs

My female cat who is 2 years old has a sore on her back legs. Her left hind is the worst it's on her hock. Its red and seems to be getting worse it's a complete circle. It also has lots of tiny little black dots on it! Sometimes when she's sitting down to eat she will hold her leg funny so that it's not touching the floor so it must be sore! She's very uncomfortable when we try and touch around it.

This looks like a site of infection and possibly an abscess if the surrounding area is very swollen. It does sound like she is uncomfortable because of it. I would recommend taking Daisy in to see your vet because she may need antibiotics to help clear it up. It is most likely a skin infection or abscess but since it is centered around her joint there is concern that there could be infection in the joint as well.
