Is my dog's coughing, gagging, and bloody stool an urgent issue?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rat Terrier | Female | spayed | 2 years and 11 months old | 19 lbs

My dog is coughing and gagging a lot but only after vigorous exercise. Today she coughed up a bunch of white mucus and then stopped coughing. She's also had intermittent constipation and diarrhea with bits of blood in it. Her spirits and energy levels are good. We haven't been able to get her to the vet yet. Is this an urgent problem or possibly just a cold? Thanks

Dogs don't tend to get common colds with the same frequency we do. If she is coughing and gagging after exercise I would plan to get Cherry examined by her vet fairly soon. Coughing and gagging may be from GI issues, or enlarged heart or heartworm disease among other things. Her GI signs also point to something going on that needs to be addressed. Your vet can do a physical exam combined with history and discuss appropriate diagnostics to find out what is going on with Cherry.
