My Lab puppy has abscesses. What underlying causes to worry about?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 24 days old | 12 lbs

We got a couple of Lab puppies when they were only 5 weeks old, over the weekend we noticed that they had swollen areas on their paws legs tummy, at first we thought it was ring worm, we took them to the vet and they said it was abscesses, now we are worries that there may be some underlying cause for this to happen. Are there any conditions we should worry about that can causes abscess like this?

Hello There can be bacterial infections as well as parasites like Demodex that can cause those lesions. With puppies that age there could be genetic immune diseases making them predisposed to infections as well. I recommend consulting with your veterinarian about if they think an underlying disease is going on and if there is any other treatment needed long term for your puppies.
