Why is my dog's lip raw and bloody from scratching? How to clean?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 9 years and 4 months old | 54 lbs

My dog has been scratching his left lower lip (jowel sp?) to the point that is is now raw and bloody. Any idea what could be irritating it and/or how to clean it? He does this sometimes.

It looks like your dog could be suffering from lip fold pyoderma, an infection of the skin on the lower lip. Often oral antibiotics are needed at least initially to treat this condition. For now clean the area with mild soap and then keep it as dry as possible. If your dog is running with his foot an e-collar can help stop this until he gets in to see the vet, to check and see if this is indeed his problem.
