My Shih Tzu is head bobbing, listless, losing balance when stressed.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 6.9 lbs

My 6lb shih tzu is acting odd. When she is stressed even slightly she begins head bobbing, loses balance, becomes listless, her pulse drops from approximately 120bpm to 60bpm, won't eat. This lasts 12 to 24 hours before she is back to normal. She had 1 episode when she was 6 months, the 2nd around 1yr. She is now 11/2yrs. And has 2 episodes in 4 days. A typical addisons has been ruled out.

It sounds like Sophie needs further tests which can be frustrating to hear. Her signs could indicate anything from seizures to heart disease to other metabolic diseases. With the episodes increasing in frequency I recommend getting her to her veterinarian for another exam and to discuss what additional tests could be done to diagnose the cause of these episodes.
