Why is my dog withdrawn, gaining weight, not walking since new dog?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 40 lbs

Hi, We have a lurcher dog and lately she has seemed really withdrawn and is barely excited for her walks anymore. She's 6 years old. At the moment we are fostering another dog so I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but she has never been bothered about them before. She also seems to have put on weight but we are not sure as we don't have access to any proper scales. Any help would be appreciated thankyou

I wuld recmmend a full physical exam by your vet to rule out medical causes for the lethargy and weight gain - thyroid disease can commonly cause such signs and heart and liver disease can result in fluid retention (often with some muscle loss and weakness). Bullying and intimidation from a new, dominant dog may also cause her to be reluctant to walk and a calming supplement may help if this is the only reason
