Cockatiel in small bedroom: What's the risk of bird fancier's lung?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male | unneutered

How large is the risk for bird fancier's lung if I have a cockatiel in my pretty small bedroom next to my bed? And would the risk still be the same if I got an air purifier and kept the bird and cage clean? Thanks

This is somewhat a question for your human medical professional. Bird Fancier's lung refers to an inflammatory process caused by an allergic reaction to bird dander and feathers. I would suggest you discuss with your doctor, as certain allergic conditions may make people more prone to this. In general, keeping cages clean and an air purifier is healthy for birds and humans in the environment. But keep in mind that cockatiels can produce a fair amount of powder and dander.
