Why does my cat have reoccurring scabs on ears, lips, and jaw?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 11 months and 3 days old | 10 lbs

My cat always has reoccurring scabs behind both ears, and under his lips and jawline. I don't know where they come from. I never see him fight with my other cats. He has cerebellar hypoplasia. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. Should I be concerned? What could be causing these?

Little Brother is a very handsome kitty! :) These scabs would not be caused by his cerebellar hypoplasia. It's likely that they are due to a skin problem of some kind, such as allergies, fleas, or a bacterial or fungal skin infection. He may also have an ear infection, as many cats will cause scabs and other wounds in this area by scratching excessively at their ears. I would recommend taking your kitty to the vet for an exam when you are able to. He/she can do some simple skin tests to help determine what is causing the scabs and get him started on appropriate medication to treat the problem.
