My dog lies down on walks, not tired. When should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 6 months and 12 days old | 80 lbs

I'm a little bit worried, my dog keeps lying down mid-walk. At first I thought it was the heat because he kept picking shady areas of grass, but he's doing it again today and it's cool outside. He's full of energy and we haven't been walking long so I don't think he could be tired as he just got out from his crate. He's eating and drinking fine so no obviously signs of illness or injury. Should I be taking him to the vet for this behaviour?

If this is not behavioral in origin, two medical possibilities come to mind: hip dysplasia or a cardiac problem such as subaortic stenosis. Golden retrievers, for example, have the potential for both. It might help to know what Moose's "mix" is--that is, what breeds are behind him. I would definitely take him to the vet to see if the cause can be determined.
