Should male cats stay with their mates and kittens as a family?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | RagaMuffin | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 8 lbs

Once the cats are mated, do they stay together? Should we keep them as a family? My toms girl moved the kittens into our house now he rarely comes home and I don't know if he wants them here.

Tomcats do not typically stay with their mates, or with their kittens once they are born - they continue to roam and mate with as many females as possible. Many female cats will actually not allow the male near them or the kittens. So there is no need to try and keep them as a family - in fact this may be difficult, especially if they don't want to be around each other. You can certainly keep the female and kittens if you wish, but I would not expect your boy to show much interest in them.
