Why is my unneutered male cat suddenly roaming and not eating?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | British Shorthair | Male | unneutered

Carolus was a stray before I took him in last Feb. He's unneutered. He always goes out of the house in specific timing and knows when to come back home. He was fine then, doesn't meow and always eats his food. But recently, he begins to meow at my front door at random time, he doesn't eat and doesn't come back home like he use to. When I saw him outside just now, usually he will approach me when I called him, then I'll pick him up and bring him home. But just now, he ran away from me.

I'm not sure how old Carolus is, but unfortunately it's very common to see this kind of behavior change in unneutered males once they reach social maturity - he is probably out looking for females to mate with, or fighting with other male cats, as both of these are more important to him right now than anything else. I would strongly recommend having him neutered when you are able to - this should curb his tendency to roam and not come home, and will make him a much better pet overall :)
