Dog food for staffy after prostate surgery to keep stools soft?

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 16 years and 7 months old | 27 lbs

7 year old staffy just been desexed due to benign prostate enlargement, restricting bowels and had to have an emena under general week later. been told to keep him on coloxyl BD and the Hills digestive care i/d....his enlargement is resolving, , Im not sure about tins of Hills Science food... need to keep stools soft, what alternative could we safely feed while inflamation and peristaltic movement in upper bowel that was stretched with improve. possible have to monitor bowels for life..

The problem is Hills i/d might actually make the feces harder, so this wouldn't be my first choice, i think it is better to feed him an over the counter wet food, there is a higher chance it will contribute to soft feces.
