My unneutered dog constantly pees in the house. How can I stop it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 5 lbs

My dog was never fixed and continuously pees over the house and has for the past nine years. Our floors are ruined and the house sticks but he is our best friend. We don't know if we could handle this for another five years, but we don't know what to do because we love him deeply

I can understand being frustrated! Having a dog who urinates in the house constantly can be very difficult to live with. Unfortunately, since this has been a habit for him for the past nine years, it will be very difficult to break now. You could consider having Charlie wear a belly band (like a diaper for male dogs) in the house at all times, and make sure to take him out frequently and praise him for urinating outdoors. He may learn to "hold it" inside eventually if you work at it, but I doubt very much that he will ever be completely reliable.

Unfortunately, Spud has 2 behaviors that neutering may help. Testosterone can play a role in marking behaviors in the house (which is considered a normal behavior for an intact male). Testosterone can also play a role in aggression in some dogs. So, I would recommend consulting with your veterinarian about that. I have attached a link to a handout below that may also give you some ideas. http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=2284 In the meantime, the longer a dog urinates in the house, the harder it will be to eliminate the behavior. I would recommend a belly band (https://www.bellybands.net/) to prevent the behavior for now. Also, make sure you are not punishing Spud for urinating in the house. That may make aggression worse. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using PetCoach.
