Why is my American Bully mix itching with skin welts and sores?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 75 lbs

75lb American Bully mix was a rescue. He loves to sun bath in the grass however he's developed the welps and open sores on the back and top of his head. He itsches and licks constantly. Would this be a food allergy? If so what would be a good recommendation for food?

Hello there. This is not likely a food allergy. It is more likely to be an environmental allergy - grass or pollen or something else outside. Food allergies are actually pretty rare. Bully breeds are very prone to allergies in general. You could spend a lot of money buying different foods and products and spending money treating the skin but really you should take him to the a veterinary dermatologist and get allergy testing done. That way you can just find out what he is allergic to instead of guessing. It will cost you less money in the long run. There is a vet clinic in your area that has a dermatologist. I am not endorsing them in anyway. I do not know them at all. I just did a Google search based on your zip code. I think it would be worthwhile for you to check them out. http://fairviewpetvet.com/decatur-pet-dermatology.html I hope this helps. Best wishes! Dr. Amber
