My dachshund has disc pain. Can I give aspirin? How do I safely move her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | unspayed | 10 years and 1 month old | 15 lbs

Is it ok to give a baby aspirin to a 10 lb dachshund, that has/probably has a bad vertebral disc, suggested by another DMV on pet coach. I can not get to the vet till Tuesday. Also, what is the best way to transport her, she is in pain, moderate, we have been using a towel under the belly with little success. Unfortunately there are 4 steps off the deck to get to the back yard Thank you.

I'm sorry to hear that Aggie is in pain! However, I never recommend giving aspirin to dogs as a pain reliever because of the risk of gastrointestinal ulceration and risk of blood thinning. Unfortunately, there are no safe pain medications available for dogs over the counter. The best thing you can do is keep Aggie confined to a crate or very small room to prevent her from walking or jumping, as this could worsen any injury. If Aggie is unable to walk and is dragging her hind legs, this is an emergency situation and must be addressed immediately. To lift her, be sure to support Aggie with one hand under her chest and one hand under her abdomen. I hope that she is feeling better soon!
