My dog ate onions and is sick. When should I worry and see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 6 months and 25 days old | 52 lbs

pup (7 months) ate a few diced onions about 4 days ago, had diarrhea and vomiting (no blood) for around 30 hours. I fasted him for about 20 hours and gave him some white rice and boiled chicken. Seems fine with a temp of about 100.3. I gave him some broth as well, but now realize it had onions in the veggie portion. He had less than 1/4 cup between two days. How long should I try these home remedies (minus the broth) before seeking medical attention? He seems normal, other than stomach and fever

It sounds like you did the right thing for Loki so far. If you ever have questions about what is safe to give him or your other pets, please feel free to ask us here on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! That is what we are here for. I'm sure your vet's office would not mind to answer questions if you call them either. Keep an eye on Loki for the next few days because, as you already know, onions can be very dangerous in these little guys. If you notice that Loki seems more lethargic or tired than normal, take him to your vet right away. Once there your vet can perform a lab test (a CBC) to make sure the onions did not cause a problem.
