Why is my dog crying and licking his anus? Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 47 lbs

I am on vacation with my dog, after a very active, normal day, my dog has started crying and licking his anus. 2 weeks ago he had his anal glass checked, there was very little fluid and everything checked out great. He has a history of objects becoming lodged, but always half way passes them. Should I take him to the closest 24 hr vet 51 miles away at 11 pm or can this wait for a vets office near me to open first thing in the morning? Thank you!

I don't think this sounds like an emergency. Unless you start seeing active bleeding from the anus or blood in the stool, this isn't something that can't wait until the morning. You might be in for a rough night if your Pongo doesn't stop whining, but I think thing should be fine. Obviously if you start to see an increase in the severity of clinical signs or any additional signs, you might want to repost on here for an updated opinion from one of our experts. Hope this helps.
