Dog ate hide chew fast. Is it safe? What about 'long-lasting' claims?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 6 months and 10 days old | 80 lbs

I got my dog some healthy hide beef chews today, and within two hours he's already eaten most of it. Are hide chews safe for dogs to eat like that? I'm thinking I won't give him another for at least a week and see how he is. The bag said they are long-lasting for dogs that chew a lot, but he's managed to eat most of it pretty fast.

"Long-lasting" is a very relative term. I get massive bully sticks labeled the same exact way for my pit bulls. Even the biggest ones they can go through in an hour or so. I wouldn't be alarmed by what happened unless he is swallowing them completely whole. One of my dogs likes to swallow them and then store them in her throat. As you can imagine, this is not a very safe thing to happen. In terms of healthy, good quality chews, this is what I feed my dogs. They are a little pricy, but honestly compared to the same stuff they sell at Petsmart the prices are better. www.bestbullysticks.com Hope this helps!
