Why are my danios chasing and hiding? Are they fighting or stressed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Fish | Unknown - Fish | Male | unneutered | 0.1 lbs

Hi, In my tank I have 2 danios, 1 ghost catfish, 2 mollies, 2 tetras, and one baby ballon belly Mollie. One of my Danios constantly chases the other. I can't tell if they are playing or fighting, because they aren't hurt in any way, but the one getting chased is constantly hiding. One of my tetras has picked up similar behavior. The danio that is chasing the other is significantly bigger than the smaller one. Plz help, thanks

Danios are schooling fish. You need more than two. At least 5-6 would be optimal. Tetras are also schooling fish. Two groups of schooling fish requires a large tank, at least 20 gallons. The behavior is likely stress related due to the lack of an adequate group for them. Those issues aside, mollies and tetras have different water requirements. Mollies thrive in hard, alkaline water while Tetras prefer soft, acidic water.
