My large dog is limping but his paw looks fine. What's wrong?

Hello. My girlfriend has a big dog and he started limping. His pads are fine. His toes look like they are ok. From what I can see there isn't any problems. But you can tell he is trying not to put pressure on his foot. What could this mean? Like I said from looking at his foot it looks ok but when he walks you can tell something is wrong.

It is possible that Harley could have injured his foot somehow even if there are no external wounds. Injuries to the foot could be either to the bone (i.e. a fracture), to the muscle (strain or sprain), or to the ligaments (ruptured ligaments). If the injury is a strain or sprain it will likely heal by itself with time and rest. However, a fracture or a ligament rupture would need medical intervention (such as a splint or surgery) as well as pain medications.

There are many possible ways a dog could injure his leg. Keep him rested with only short toilet walks for 72hours. If not resolved he should get a full physical exam and possibly xrays , large breed dogs are very prone to joint conditions such as hip dysplasia and cruciate ligament injuries
