Bottle-fed kitten coughing, mouth open, won't suck milk. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 15 days old | 0.45 lbs

I've a pair of infant cats. I feed them both a mixture of egg+milk at room temperature, never cold. They've been doing pretty well for past 7 days but since yesterday one of them has started 'coughing' i'd say and keeps her mouth open at times and denies to suck milk from the feeder. What should i do ? And what did i do wrong? Please help me out here I'd be more than grateful to you

I am most concerned that Holly could have aspirated some milk into her lungs. Sadly this can be common with bottle-fed kittens and can be very serious if not treated by a veterinarian. Holly needs to see a veterinarian ASAP. She will probably need strong antibiotics and possibly oxygen supplementation to help treat aspiration pneumonia. I do not think you did anything wrong. It just happens sometimes. One thing I would change if possible would be to only offer kitten milk replacer. I do not recommend mixing egg in the milk as it is not cooked and the kitten should not need egg if on a good kitten milk replacer. Good luck!
