Why is my crate-trained dog suddenly crying in his crate at night?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 6 months and 9 days old | 80 lbs

My dog has been crate trained for months and goes into his crate every night around 11pm. He has his supper and water and goes outside and then he always sleeps quietly until morning. Tonight all of a sudden he's whining and crying and I can't figure out why. I tried letting him outside and giving him a drink but he's still crying. Should I be concerned about this behaviour?

If it's only happened once, I wouldn't be too concerned as it may just be something startled Moose that evening. If the behavior continues, then looking for triggers such as strange noises, people, animals, sounds, etc may alert you as to why he is becoming agitated at night. Moving the crate to a quieter place may help. If he starts showing signs of illness, or remains agitated all the time, then scheduling a vet visit to rule out any health issues is smart.

It is important not to let her out when she cries (assuming there is not a medical cause). Letting her out while she is crying will reinforce the behavior. If you are noticing she needs to go outside to potty, I recommend to have her checked for a bladder infection. You may also try to make her kennel a positive place by feeding her there, giving her a special toy or treat and giving her heavy exercise prior to bed. Most pets will outgrow this behavior. I hope this helps.
