My dog has a black spot in a pore. Why is the skin around it swollen?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 10 years and 4 months old | 60 lbs

There is a bead-sized black ball in my dog's pore. The skin around it is slightly swollen, but I think that's because I tried to get it out myself. Have you ever heard of this before?

Some older pets with endocrine disease develop comedones which are keratin deposit in open pores (i.e. Blackhead). However, the skin around a comedone is not swollen. You may have caused inflammation by attempting to remove it yourself or it could be infected. The best thing to do is leave it alone and follow up with your veterinarian if the selling fails to resolve.
