My dog is suddenly dizzy, vomiting, and breathing shallow. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 4 months old

My dog has just had a sudden case of dizziness. He kept lickng and swallowing like he felt sick, so I got up and told him we'd go downstairs for a drink, he fell down the stairs and staggered to the back yard where he vomited and peed. I gave him some plain biscuits and comforted him and he seems a little less dizzy, but his breathing seems shallow. Any ideas what could be wrong, or anything else I should do?

Dizziness and nausea could be caused by several different things. First, I would ensure that there was nothing out of the ordinary Jasper could have gotten into (like people food or treats) as that could upset his tummy. If he recovered from this episode uneventfully you could keep an eye on him for the next few hours and see how he does. If there's more vomiting, disorientation or seizure like behavior (like trembling or convulsions) I would take him in to see your vet. They may want to run some lab work to make sure everything is ok. Good luck!
