My dog has a large, sudden lump on her leg. What can I do at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 3 months old | 50 lbs

My dog was bitten by something about a month ago on her front, upper right leg. It swelled up so I gave her benadryl. After a week or so the swelling went down. A couple weeks later, she injured her paw on the same leg. It's almost completely healed now but there is this mass forming on her neck/shoulder on the same leg. She isn't putting all her weight on it and it is slightly firm. It is about the size of a grapefruit and appeared over the course of two days. What can I do at home to help her

Anything that large that has appeared over such a short period of time needs to be examined by a veterinarian. It is possible that it can grow too large, undergo too much pressure, and burst. The location of the mass that you are describing makes it more concerning as well, as it is going to have an effect on both mobility and the neck. I don't know if I would wait until morning to have this checked out, since this could potentially open up in the middle of the night and be problematic. Hope this helps and that Calypso gets better soon.
