My dog's leg wound won't heal after months, even with a cone. Help!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 90 lbs

My dog has had this open wound on his leg for a few months now. He has a cone we put on him for him to stop licking it but nothing has helped. Should I be worried?

Oh my, this is a large wound for Ruger! Treatment and prognosis for this type of lesion will be dependent upon the initial cause (i.e. burns, cancer, ringworm infection, bacterial infection from a skin infection, etc.). Ideally, I do recommend taking him to the vet to determine if the wound has become infected so that appropriate treatment can be started. Topical sprays, such as Vetericyn, can be helpful with many cases of wound healing, but do not start any of these treatments without first consulting Ruger's vet. I hope that all goes well!

Have Ruger examined by your veterinarian. Anti inflammatories and antibiotics may be indicated (along with keeping the collar in place) to aid in resolving this lesion. If there is no response, consider a biopsy of the area to submit a sample for pathology.
