My puppy is coughing, choking, and vomiting milk. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 25 days old | 3.307 lbs

I couldn't send him to the vet today due to the very heavy rain, now it's closed. He's 3 weeks and 4 days old. He's sneezing, coughing/choking, and vomiting 2-3 drops of milk. Sometimes, when he sleeps, he makes sure he positions his head in an elevated way. When he feeds, he inhales some of the milk due to his enthusiasm. Is that the reason? Aside from that, he shakes his head often. Stool is normal. Eats normally. What can I do to alleviate his situation while I wait for the check up tomorrow?

Inhalation of even a small amount of milk in a tiny little puppy like this can be deadly if treatment is not instituted right away. Aspiration pneumonia is one of the most common causes of death in bottle babies. If you are noting significant coughing / choking, I would also keep an eye out for increased respiratory noises. This would include wheezing and raspy hoarse noises. If you hear this, it would probably be a good idea to stop feeding until you get him to the vet. At that point, the doctor will decide if providing additional nutrition orally is worth the risk, versus injectable nutrition. Hope this is help.
