My dog's eye is red, swollen, and discharging. Could it be scratched?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 13 lbs

I noticed my 1.5 terrier mix rubbing and scratching at his eye. This is the third day he had been rubbing his eye and today it's swollen in the corner of his eye, red and discharging. I think he may have scratched it, he has never had fleas. I am not sure what I should do for my fur baby.

It's very difficult to tell from a picture if a dog or cat has scratched their eye. The best thing to do if this is what you fear may have happened is to allow a vet to put some fluoroscein solution into the eye. What this does is it seeks out any damaged corneal tissue and settles along it. This allows us to see if there is any actual damage, and if there is, tells us which medications are appropriate vs harmful. This is what I would suggest.
